Building a Modern Farmhouse

“This is our happy place.”

There is something to be said about a space that is contemporary, cozy, simple and yet full of character. But what exactly is it that makes a modern farmhouse? If you ask us, it’s the clean lines, contrasts, architectural details, neutral palettes, textures, and balance.

Whether you’re building, renovating, or refreshing a room, here are a few things you can do to your home to achieve a modern farmhouse look and feel.

Put it in Neutral

All of the neutrals. Various shades of whites, creams, and beiges. Blacks and greys. Sage. Don’t be too wild when it comes to colours, if you are seeking a modern farmhouse vibe. A simplistic, clean colour palette creates a fresh canvas that will allow the architectural details and furniture pieces to speak for themselves. If you are going to do just one thing to create a modern farmhouse look, this is a great place to start and will make the world of a difference.

PS. This colour rule applies to paint choices, textiles, finishes, and beyond. Play with different shades, but don’t steer too far from modern neutrals.

Organic Textures

The key to achieving that modern farmhouse look is all in the materials of your furniture pieces and decor items; whether it’s your couch, your coffee table, or a vase on your counter. You can do this by pulling authentic pieces that are made from natural and organic materials, such as wood, linen, metal, rattan, stone, wicker, cotton, or canvas. Filling your home with natural textures will bring warmth, create dimension, add depth, and draw the eye.

Bold Accents & Contrast

A modern farmhouse is truly all about creating the perfect balance between light and dark; contrast. In a neutral palette, this makes it pretty easy! Play with your cabinetry hardware, faucets, salt and pepper shakers, pot-fillers, lighting, and everything in between. Get creative. It can be as simple as painting your dining room chairs black.
